TEI Models for the Publication of Social Sciences and Humanities Journals: Opportunities, Challenges, and First Steps Toward a Standardized Workflow

The TEI Guidelines are developed and curated by a community whose main purpose is to standardize the encoding of primary sources relevant for humanities research and teaching. But other communities are also working with TEI-based publication formats.

The first goal of this paper is to raise awareness of the importance of TEI-based scholarly publishing as we know it today.

The second goal is to contribute to a reflection on the development of a TEI customization that would cover the whole authoring-reviewing-publishing workflow and guarantee archiving options that are as solid for journal publications as what we now have for primary sources published in TEI.

Digital Editions and Version Numbering

Digital editions are easily modified after they are first published — a state of affairs that poses challenges both for long-term scholarly reference and for various forms of electronic distribution and analysis.

This article argues that producers of digital editions should assign meaningful version numbers to their editions and update those version numbers with each change, allowing both humans and computers to know when resources have been modified and how significant the changes are.

As an examination of versioning practices in the software industry reveals, version numbers are not neutral descriptors but social products intended for use in specific contexts, and the producers of digital editions must consider how version numbers will be used in developing numbering schemes.

It may be beneficial to version different parts of an edition separately, and in particular to version the data objects or content of an edition independently from the environment in which it is displayed.

The article concludes with a case study of the development of a versioning policy for the Piers Plowman Electronic Archive, and includes an appendix surveying how a selection of digital editions handle the problem of recording and communicating changes.

Harmoniser les pratiques éditoriales numériques des revues françaises d’archéologie

Cet article présente un projet d’harmonisation de la politique d’édition numérique de cinq revues d’archéologie qui s’inscrivent dans un contexte concernant une quarantaine de supports éditoriaux du domaine en France.

Mettant à profit des outils technologiques et documentaires disponibles pour l’édition, en archéologie et dans ses sciences connexes en particulier, ces revues ont décidé de faire évoluer leurs pratiques en adoptant une grammaire et un corpus de mots-clés communs et en expérimentant de nouveaux modèles interopérables de structuration et d’indexation de leurs contenus.

Elles sont ainsi imbriquées dans une chaîne de production scientifique qui mêle volontiers référencement des publications et des données. La visée est d’élargir et de faciliter l’accès à l’information scientifique.

Le fait numérique a été pensé et interprété pendant des dizaines d’années dans diverses perspectives disciplinaires : des media studies aux sciences de l’information et de la communication, en passant par la sociologie, la psychologie, les sciences politiques, etc. Cela n’est pas surprenant dès que l’on considère – avec Milad Doueihi – que le « numérique » peut être pensé comme un phénomène culturel au sens large, touchant à l’ensemble de nos vies et remettant en cause la totalité de nos catégories conceptuelles.

L’expression « humanités numériques » peut en quelque sorte servir à signifier cette universalité du fait numérique : il est question de ce que devient l’humanité à l’époque du numérique. La même universalité est ce qu’aspire à prendre en compte une approche philosophique : au-delà de toute spécificité disciplinaire, le questionnement philosophique vise à comprendre un phénomène ou un fait dans l’ensemble de ses implications.

Cet article a l’ambition de partir du concept d’éditorialisation pour proposer une théorie philosophique du monde à l’époque du numérique. Une philosophie, donc, non pas « du numérique », car l’objet de la philosophie ne peut qu’être universel, mais plutôt une philosophie « à l’époque du numérique ».

Analysing the Usage Data of Open Access Scholarly Books: What Can Data Tell Us?

This study explores data captured on the Internet related to OA scholarly books to provide a detailed overall picture of the dissemination of these books beginning from the point they were made OA.

To uncover the factors that impact on the digital uses of OA books, it explores relationships between book characteristics and the characteristics and motivations of the groups using and sharing books in digital landscapes.

Ce document récapitule la méthodologie adoptée pour constituer un corpus de textes thématique consacré à l’ichtyologie, en utilisant l’environnement Ichtya créé pour le programme de recherche du même nom.

C’est en constituant cette méthodologie et en la respectant pour tous les textes du corpus que le corpus Ichtya a pu être publié et exploité.
