Open Science: A Review of Its Effectiveness and Implications for Service Research

Open science aims to enhance the integrity, transparency, and openness of research to improve the reproducibility and accessibility of scientific knowledge. It has received renewed attention due to reported concerns about questionable research practices across multiple scientific disciplines. While various open science practices, such as preregistration and data sharing, have been developed, their effectiveness remains unclear.

This paper provides a review of current meta-research on open science practices, assessing their effectiveness and identifying key initiatives that promote transparency and openness in research. Next, we report the results of a preregistered retrospective observational analysis of 517 studies from 254 papers published in the Journal of Service Research and Journal of Service Management between 2019 and 2023.

This analysis evaluates which open science practices are already in use and to what extent, as well as whether these practices align with the recommendations derived from the meta-research review. Finally, we present actionable guidelines and resources aimed at encouraging authors, reviewers, and editors to adopt effective open science practices in service research, both in the short and long term.

Incentives for Open Science and Advancing Sustainability: A German Perspective

Open science in ensuring equitable access to information is relevant to the attainment of all United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Badges, prizes and awards evaluate and recognise achievements, encourage involvement in open science and open access practices and provide an opportunity to present related activities to the outside world in a succinct form.

The focus, however, is not on mundane self-promotion, but rather on the goal of external and internal reflection and promotion of the work done, as well as an appropriate presentation of the open resources and workflows produced. Prizes and awards constitute a stimulus for best practice, education and exchange both within an institution, with an institution ́s users and with the wider community.

This chapter provides an overview of the various badges, awards and prizes relevant to Germany as incentive systems for open science and open access activities. The contributions to the SDGs and education for sustainable development (ESD) are contextualised and discussed. It concludes with a selection of recommendations and summarises the most important results.

Open science in qualitative evaluations : Considerations and Opportunities

This article discusses how open science principles—often rooted in quantitative epistemologies—and qualitative evaluation practices can complement each other and explores strategies for evaluators and researchers to consider adopting in their practices.

Although the qualitative and quantitative approaches to knowledge creation may be perceived as being in conflict, many practices and values can be viewed as different expressions of the shared goals of rigor and transparency. We describe practices like data, process, and outcome sharing as activities that already align with open science values and encourage evaluators to consider practices like preregistration, registered reports, and replication as possible areas for evaluators to expand into.

We also encourage evaluators to contribute to conversations about transparency, community engagement, evaluating effectiveness, and avoiding harm. A flexible, additive approach to evaluation and research projects can allow all parties to draw on each other’s strengths for more rigorous, comprehensive, transparent, and community-centered work.

Finally, we suggest a few starting places for evaluators who are interested in incorporating open science practices and researchers who are interested in conducting qualitative evaluations.

Evaluation of Open Science for co-creation of Social Innovations: Aconceptual framework

Open Science is a rapidly expanding and diversifying field of social innovation with significant implications for and potential benefits to society, policy and various academic research areas. However, much is still unknown about the co-creation processes in Open Science and an overall conceptual framework which aids such understanding is missing.

The article aims to address these limitations and identify the key dimensions of an ecosystem allowing co-creation in Open Science to unfold its social and economic impact. The research presented integrates the literature analysis on co-creation in multi-stakeholder ecosystems and suggest that three important dimensions have to be considered in evaluation of Open Science ecosystems: framework conditions, system conditions and outcomes.

The proposed model was applied in qualitative analysis of thirty-three Open Science case studies. Based on the results of evaluation, it can be concluded that Open Science landscape is highly heterogenous, fragmented and not fully coordinated. The fragmentation appeared in all dimensions of evaluation.

The outcomes of the research provide a first exploratory step in proposing innovative measures to determine the elements of co-creation practices within Open Science context.

The academic impact of Open Science: a scoping review

Open Science seeks to make research processes and outputs more accessible, transparent and inclusive, ensuring that scientific findings can be freely shared, scrutinized and built upon by researchers and others. To date, there has been no systematic synthesis of the extent to which Open Science (OS) reaches these aims.

We use the PRISMA scoping review methodology to partially address this gap, scoping evidence on the academic (but not societal or economic) impacts of OS. We identify 485 studies related to all aspects of OS, including Open Access (OA), Open/FAIR Data (OFD), Open Code/Software, Open Evaluation and Citizen Science (CS).

Analysing and synthesizing findings, we show that the majority of studies investigated effects of OA, CS and OFD. Key areas of impact studied are citations, quality, efficiency, equity, reuse, ethics and reproducibility, with most studies reporting positive or at least mixed impacts.

However, we also identified significant unintended negative impacts, especially those regarding equity, diversity and inclusion. Overall, the main barrier to academic impact of OS is lack of skills, resources and infrastructure to effectively re-use and build on existing research.

Building on this synthesis, we identify gaps within this literature and draw implications for future research and policy.

The Economic Impact of Open Science: A Scoping Review

This paper summarised a comprehensive scoping review of the economic impact of Open Science (OS), examining empirical evidence from 2000 to 2023. It focuses on Open Access (OA), Open/FAIR Data (OFD), Open Source Software (OSS), and Open Methods, assessing their contributions to efficiency gains in research production, innovation enhancement, and economic growth.

Evidence, although limited, indicates that OS accelerates research processes, reduces the related costs, fosters innovation by improving access to data and resources and this ultimately generates economic growth. Specific sectors, such as life sciences, are researched more and the literature exhibits substantial gains, mainly thanks to OFD and OA.

OSS supports productivity, while the very limited studies on Open Methods indicate benefits in terms of productivity gains and innovation enhancement. However, gaps persist in the literature, particularly in fields like Citizen Science and Open Evaluation, for which no empirical findings on economic impact could be detected.

Despite limitations, empirical evidence on specific cases highlight economic benefits. This review underscores the need for further metrics and studies across diverse sectors and regions to fully capture OS’s economic potential.

Open Science Infrastructure in Croatia: Examples and Trends

This paper will present examples of open science infrastructure and trends in Croatia as well as a view of librarians’ role in development and support of open science infrastructure. The aim of this paper is to showcase several parts of the Croatian open science infrastructure which were formed with the idea of Open Access in mind and with heavy involvement of librarians. Croatian national e-infrastructure for academic and scientific community has been in development since the founding of the University Computing Centre (SRCE) within the University of Zagreb in 1971.

SRCE has become a major national infrastructural ICT institution and is involved in most of the open science infrastructure projects in Croatia. Open Access has been a key point of Croatian e-infrastructure since the 90’s when the Open Access movement started in 1997 with the launch of the first version of the Croatian scientific bibliography – CROSBI developed by the Ruđer Bošković Institute Library.

From the beginning, it offered an option of storing a full text file alongside the bibliographic record which was an advanced concept at that time. HRČAK is a central Open Access portal launched in 2006. It offers Open Access to papers from Croatian scientific and professional journals as well as journals for the popularization of science and culture. DABAR (Digital Academic Archives and Repositories) was launched in 2015 as a digital object repository for higher education and research institutions in Croatia.

It was the result of cooperation between SRCE and National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK) who recognised the need for this key component in the Croatian e-infrastructure. Repositories in DABAR are encouraged to register with Open DOAR and OpenAIRE. Croatia is moving forward with Open Access and Open Science Infrastructure with the launch of the Croatian Research Information System CroRIS in 2023.
